Facebook Friend Lists Separate Pals from Professors

Once upon a time Facebook was just for college kids.  This was a time when we all posted pictures and wrote on walls without a care in the world, accepting complete strangers as our friends.  Now that Facebook is no longer exclusive, almost anyone can get hold of your Internet scrapbook featuring memories from your wild college years.  This is where Facebook friend lists come in handy. Friend lists give you a way to organize your friends on Facebook and assign them to different privacy settings.  You have the option to assign friends to different levels of privacy, opening or closing sections of your profile to a select group of people.

To create your own friend lists, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the “Account” dropdown on your Facebook homepage
  2. Select “Edit Friends”
  3. Click “Create a List”
  4. Name your new list and start adding friends

In a perfect world we would be able to set the privacy levels at the same time we create the group.  But, Facebook isn’t perfect (yet).  To set specific privacy levels for each list, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the “Account” dropdown on your Facebook homepage
  2. Select “Privacy Settings”
  3. Click “Customize Settings” to see all of your customization options
  4. Select a category and click “Customize” from the dropdown menu
  5. Choose to make visible to “Specific People” and enter the name of the friend list with whom you’d like to share the content

This does take some time to set up but it’s worth the peace of mind to separate your bosses from your golf buddies.
