Remember when Facebook launched an email service? Probably not, because not many people opted for the service. Now, Facebook has taken the liberty of giving you a Facebook email address and making it your default contact address. If you didn't previously customize your Facebook URL then your email address is made up of random numbers that Facebook assigned to your profile - not very pretty.
According to Forbes, a Facebook spokesperson says the company has been updating Facebook addresses for users since April. Without specifying when exactly the company made this the default contract address for its users, the spokesperson says the site is "rolling out a new setting that gives people the choice to decide which addresses they want to show on their timelines."
“Ever since the launch of timeline, people have had the ability to control what posts they want to show or hide on their own timelines, and today we’re extending that to other information they post, starting with the Facebook address,” says spokesperson Andrew Noyes via email to Forbes.
To hide your Facebook.com email address from your Timeline follow these steps:
- Click "About" on your profile page and scroll down to your contact info. Click "Edit".
- Click on the circle dropdown from next to your Facebook.com email address and change the setting to "Hidden from Timeline".
- If you'd like your other email addresses to show, click on the circle dropdown and change the setting to "Shown on Timeline".
- Click "Save".
Are you okay with Facebook changing your email address? Is it up to Facebook to decide what shows on your profile and what doesn't?
