How to Get a Google+ Custom URL

google plus custom urlGoogle+ is now offering custom URLs for your account or brand page. A Google+ custom URL is short and easy to remember. For example, YouTube's Google+page is now google.com/+YouTube, rather than https://plus.google.com/115229808208707341778. If you meet the eligibility requirements, you can choose one of the custom URLs Google preassigns to your Google+ profile or page. Requirements for getting a custom URL are:

  • Ten or more followers
  • Your account is 30 days old or more
  • A profile photo
  • Eligibility for Local Google+ pages: Must be a verified business

If you meet the above criteria, you'll see a notification at the top of your Google+ profile or page. Click the 'Get a custom URL' button to get started.

If you wish to change the capitalization of your custom URL, go to the 'Links' section of your profile and a box will appear allowing you to make edits to the formatting.

Social Media Content Ideas

Social media networks require constant attention and that can be a struggle for busy business owners.  Finding content ideas leads to the intensive process of creating, publishing and promoting that content.  In an information hungry world, fans and followers want information and they want it now! According to Jeff Bullas, there are four main types of content that you should be considering creating:

  1. Educational content
  2. Informative content
  3. Entertaining content
  4. Inspiring content

Remember that content on the social web needs to be multi-media rich and include media such as photos, videos, images, and infographics.

  1. Create Lists - Give people a list of things to do
  2. Provide "How To's" - Show people where to start and the steps along the way
  3. News - People want to know what is happening whether it's in their industry or city
  4. Images - Create content that takes screenshots of uses images to convey an idea, concept or story
  5. Solving Problems - Provide step-by-step instructions about the major issues that plague your industry
  6. Quotes - Nothing like an inspiring quote to put gleam in someone's eye to start their day

Google+ Pages Connect People with Businesses

After seeming like it may never happen, Google has finally launched business pages for Google+, called Google+ Pages.  The main focus of Google+ was connecting people with other people.  Now, users can build relationships with businesses they care about, too. Google+ Pages look similar to Facebook Pages, allowing businesses to connect with their audience, spread messages, promote content and generate leads. Here is a quick overview video from Google:

  • Fans can add your page to a Circle, to see status updates
  • Fans can spend time with your team, face-to-face via Google+ Hangouts

In Case You Missed It: Social Media Recap

Twitter settled a lawsuit that gives the company control over the word "tweet".  Twittad, a provider of sponsored advertising on Twitter, previously owned the trademark to the term.  Twittad trademarked its tagline, "Let your ad meet tweets" and various versions of the word "tweet."  The two companies settles their differences and Twittad will transfer the "tweet" trademark to Twitter. Facebook finally launched its official iPad app that gives users access at their fingertips.  The Facebook iPad app includes a left-hand navigation bar for accessing News Feed, photos, messages, Groups and settings.  Notifications, chat, status updates and search are also available on the app. New features include games and HD video.

Google+ has hit a big milestone - 40 million users.  This week Google+ also announced that users can more easily find relevant information by adding real-time search and hashtags.

Google+ has begun verifying accounts, allowing celebrities and public figures to verify their identities.  For those that have been verified, a check mark and small banner will appear next to their name on their profile. Twitter launched User Galleries, a collection of the pictures users have uploaded with their Tweets.  The User Galleries are located on users' Profile pages and will feature the 100 most recent images.

"Social Media" has been added to the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary, along with the words "tweet" and "crowdsourcing".  This further enforces the large role social media is playing in our lives.  Which words do you think should be added?
